Repton 6-1 St Bede's
Match Report:
The match was effectively over after an unbelievable first fifteen minutes which saw Repton race into a 4-0 lead. The scoring was opened by Ndu CHILAKA with a trademark finish past the 'keeper. He soon added another, heading home a cross after great work on the right from Will Byas. Another run by Chilaka saw the ball centred for Luke DUGGAN who blasted into the roof of the net and the opening few minutes were completed by Sam GRAHAM who finished neatly after some scrambling in the area. St. Bede's were simply blown away and, as a result, the rest of the match had a slightly funny feel.
As we would expect St.Bede's started to work their way back into the game. In fact they nearly equalised with the score at 1-0 after an errant back-pass forced Neil Jones to dive bravely to save with his legs. The standard of our play dipped significantly after the early blitz and, if the scoreboard wasn't there, it would have been hard to distinguish who was leading the game for the last 20 minutes of the first half. Their tricky winger was caused problems all afternoon and St. Bede's did manage to pull a goal back before half-time with a swirling effort that went straight in from a corner.
The first period of the second half remained scrappy, particularly in midfield where neither side really managed to get the ball down and play; a good contest, but not one for the purists. However, mid-way through the second half we clicked into gear again with CHILAKA completing his hat-trick after picking the ball out of the air, beating several men and nestling the ball in the goal. He was to make it four goals (and eleven for the season) soon afterwards whilst also laying on a chance for Duggan that looked harder to miss....which he did!
All-in-all a funny game. I thought we fluctuated from being pretty average at times to irresistable at others. We will strive for greater consistency. That said, 6-1 is a stunning scoreline against a footballing school of such stature; we should enjoy our times in the sun without being too critical.
