The Abbey’s fine tradition of Unison singing was continued this year with the whole house’s superb rendition of The Pointer Sisters’ 80’s hit ‘Jump!’
In the whole-school competition held on Friday 4th February, The Abbey won the top Highly Commended Girls’ House award. The overall winners were New House; the first win for a boys house in a long time.

As ever, the competition amongst the girls’ houses was fierce, but The Abbey’s singing of a technically demanding piece, including one particularly high note, was musical as well as energetic. The conducting of Sarah Cotterill was rightly praised by the judge. Sarah’s organisation and coaching leading up to the event was particularly good. The House was also particularly indebted to House Tutor Mr Hodgkinson who lent his support and expertise so willingly.
The girls were delighted with the result and all acknowledged that a win for New House was well deserved, as well as being good for the health of this important competition.
The celebrations in our dining room were just as loud and lively as last year, with lots of dancing and music.
A video recording of the girl’s performance has been saved to the school network, and girls are welcome to download it to take home to show their families. The recording is not of the best quality but at least gives an indication of the high standard of The Abbey’s singing.
