Instrumental Ensembles

Repton Symphony Orchestra

The Symphony Orchestra is a platform for the school’s most able instrumentalists to work together on core orchestral repertoire. With major performances in the Michaelmas and Speech Day Concerts, the Orchestra plays to a consistently high standard. Weekly rehearsals often include sectional sessions with instrumental Heads of Section, as well as visiting professionals, and the focus is always on fine, musical detail. Recent repertoire includes movements from Mozart’s ‘Jupiter’ Symphony, Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony, Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian’ Symphony and John Williams’ ‘ET’ Theme.

String Ensemble

Directed by the Head of Strings, Repton’s String Ensemble covers a broad repertoire of popular and classical music, from ‘Counting Stars’ to Vaughan Williams and Warlock. The group features a combination of the school’s most able players who sit alongside those of an intermediate standard. With fun and joyful music-making at the heart, the String Ensemble offers something for everyone.

Chamber Music

Repton is proud of its smaller ensembles which currently include String Quartets (both Junior and Senior), Flute Group, Sax Pack, Double Reed Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble. We offer flexibility in this area too, and the department often sees new groups of instrumentalists form – often spontaneously or for one off performances!

Concert Band

Concert Band is one of the largest and most popular ensembles in the Music Department and provides a platform for many of our wind, brass and percussion players. It is an excellent vehicle for younger musicians to develop their ensemble and reading skills, but also strives to be a top-quality Concert Band, playing pieces normally associated with festival and competition classes. The highlight of the year is the annual Christmas Band Concert.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band’s repertoire comprises traditional jazz, swing, hip-hop and Latin numbers. The repertoire is chosen to highlight the strengths of individual band members and a driving rhythm section provides the underlying support for soloists to experiment and develop their approach to improvisation. The band performs at the School’s Christmas Concert, Charity Cabaret, Speech Day and for promotional events.

The piano lies at the heart of any Music School.  We have a very well served department equipped with a Steinway Grand Model ‘D’, and numerous pianos and keyboards. The recital hall has a single manual two-stop Von Nagel harpsichord and the school chapel houses a magnificent three-manual Harrison & Harrison organ. An electronic organ is also available for practice purposed. Repton is particularly proud of its large number of organ students, some of whom will often accompany Chapel services. In recent years organ students have gone on to win Oxbridge Organ Awards and cathedral scholarships.

There are weekly sessions for all pupils to work with staff to prepare for exams and for general coaching, and of course pupils enjoy accompanying each other too.

Popular Music and Bands

Musicians who prefer to play in rock bands are well-catered for in Repton, and often make our state-of-the-art studio their second home! Overseen by our Head of Popular Music, bands often form and enjoy playing in school events including Rockit! and Cabaret.
