Once again school resumes in Lent term as it does each school year, but with the addition of a new club that has already been proven to have demand and a brilliant structure. The club managed by Mrs Jones has been established in the school. A chess club has been a resonating idea throughout the school but only until the vision of Mr Land and the spear headed approach of Mrs Jones has this finally become reality, now having regular events on Tuesday at 2-3pm (coaching) and Thursday at 4-5pm (playing games).
The coaching is taught by a professional, Mr David Levens, an expert in his field with connections to many of the greatest chess masters to have ever lived, such Tal and Stein. The coach’s collective knowledge on chess has been compiled over more years than one individual has been to school, with a national rating that broke into the top 16 at one time. There could be no better coach. Tuesday is when we develop over understanding about this mentally challenging game and develop openings for future games, such as the Queen’s Indian defence or the Sicilian defence. On Thursday we begin to develop our understanding of chess learnt from Tuesday into a game, as we all have the opportunity to play an opponent of one’s own ability.
In total the first week had a total of 12 individuals, some of whom had never played. So don’t wait to play one of the most popular games in the world, come play against someone your level next Tuesday or Thursday!
